I don't think that the number of encounters that one has in some set timeframe makes them a slut. In my mind a slut is really a more of an attitude/ way of projecting themselves. A vixen would whisper in your ear that she wants to do dirty thinks to you in front of the Safeway courtesy clerk. A slut will just unzip you and try to do dirty things to you in front of the same coutesy clerk. In my opinion a slut merely doesn't always think out their actions before pursuing them.
But that's just MY opinion.

I definitely think it is an attitude/state of mind.

I think that first of all you have to really love to fuck. And then you have to be ok with the fact that you love to fuck. And finally, you have to be ok with the fact that it is ok to actually fuck without feeling guilty about it.

Good definition I heard:

A slut is a woman who will have sex with anyone.

A bitch is a woman who will have sex with anyone but YOU.

Using the definition given by B, above, I like both sluts and vixens. But given my choice, I would prefer the vixen. Slut is one of those words that means different things depending on how it is used, in what context. My ex-wife once gave me a handjob in line for the Indiana Jones ride at Disneyland. If it were a first date, and I thought of her as a slut, some would consider that to be a bad thing. Since we were married and in love, if I called her a slut, it would be a term of endearment.

There is a fine line defining what a slut is. I think "B" came very close in the definition. But I agree that being a "slut" as compared to being a vixen or promiscuous is a matter of mindset. There's nothing wrong with a woman (or man for that matter) with a strong sexual appetite. It's more about intent than action. A true "slut" doesn't take into consideration their engaging partners feelings or ideas of what the encounter is about.

For example: A woman can meet with a guy and lead him on to think that they are establishing a sort of connection. They have a sexual encounter and make him to believe that it's a prelude to either a) exclusive relations or b) special treatment towards relations. When the encounter is then finished, she becomes more selective when dealing with the man but still leads him on to think that he has a chance. Instead, she fools around with just about any other while still leading the prior on.

This example is most common among what men think are "sluts". The encounter was quickly discarded and replaced without the understanding that the encounter was nothing more than "just a fuck".

One of the best qualities of slutdom is the unapologetic nature of expressing sexuality. "Yes, I had sex with three strangers in one night. Yes, I would do it again." I don't think it has to do with how many, how often, or how risqué the activity, but more the attitude of the participant. It doesn't imply exhibitionism, an aversion to following rules or gender. Men are TOTALLY capable of being sluts, in fact, some of my favorite men are. :)

A slut is a classification and thus it is defined by others and not yourself. A 'slut' is something you are to another, not to yourself. Others may have vast definitions to classify, or more importantly vilify, berate, or scorn another. It will be based on varied ethics, but most often an insult cast like a stone from behind the shield of one who uses it to hide their own moral weakness and poverty of spirit.

Some may take ownership of it, make it their own, take pride in the word, but it is still just a word. One that like many others has the power to cut deep into the hearts of people. One capable of hindering the healthy sexual attitude of curious minds and hands. One that should be treated like other words in the barrel of ignorance; SLUT, nigger, dyke, kike, pervert, spic, faggot, looser, etc.
